Looking Back at 2011

As 2011 draws to a close, E-Mediat teams in Lebanon, Morocco and Tunisia reflect back at the trainings and experiences that made this year so special!

Five basic workshops and more than three additional workshops connected us with over 50 organizations in Lebanon and the trainings were instrumental in introducing them to the strategy of using social media. We started our work by changing the commonly views about networking, social communication and outreach strategy among local organizations.
Time was shorter than the content but we accepted the challenge because we realized that the need for this training was much larger than our challenges. Our first achievement was deleting the word “new” from the New Media Training. We believe that social media has become an essential need for organizations and not just another option; social media is the core of any organizations mainstream communications strategy rather than an auxiliary medium. We are glad that during the past year the E-Mediat trainings inspired many organizations to experiment with participatory communication approach and led to some impressive changes on the ground. “Impressive” is the word that first comes to mind when I think of the almost 50 non-governmental organizations involved in the E-Mediat program in Jordan, whom I and Heather Murphy, Sr. Program Officer at IIE, recently had the great honor of speaking with during our visit in December. All in all I met with the majority of organizations that have attended the E-Mediat sessions in Madaba, Mafraq and Zarqa since May 2011. Some travel two or three hours from rural areas, others are doing remarkable work in dense urban centers. They’re advancing women’s rights, empowerment and entrepreneurship, developing leadership skills, working with the poor and marginalized, and promoting health awareness and disease prevention. Quite compelling are the groups focusing on youth. In a country where more than 70% of the population is under 30, and 35% is under 14 years of age, working to build youth confidence, education and leadership skills is imperative. Continue reading

The last week was particularly exciting for the E-Mediat program. I visited Lebanon to meet the E-Mediat participant NGOs and learn about the amazing work that they are doing. It was incredible to see the scope of work that is being accomplished by the NGO community here. They are such a dedicated group of individuals who are passionate about their cause and determined to create positive change within their communities, in Lebanon and beyond. Through the E-Mediat workshops they are learning how to use social media tools to increase the impact their organizations and raise awareness within their communities with regards to the NGO’s mission and organizational goals. E-Mediat Lebanon Team Shares Experience of Arab Women Summit

I was more than glad to participate in The Arab Women Summit in Rabat, Morocco on December 6th and 7th. The Summit highlighted use of ICT (Information and Communications Technology) by Arab women, improving their education in ICT and giving them the opportunity to contribute to their country’s economy. The Summit was organized by IDC MEA in partnership with ISESCO and in collaboration with UNDP, UN Women, the World Bank, Intel, Dell, ESCWA, ECWT and Mohammed VI Foundation.

I shared E-Mediat experience with highly enthusiastic women coming not only from Arab countries but from all over the world to talk about the need of Arab women to be given the same access to technology as men. Currently a variety of educational, accessibility, cost and social barriers limit the use of ICT by women in the Arab countries. Continue reading

Be Bold and Reflective in Using Social Media

The excitement was palpable during the Social Media for Nonprofits conference that took place last month in San Francisco. The crowd was gearing up to hear from social media icons, such as Beth Kanter, author of the Networked Nonprofit, Craig Newmark of Craigslist, and speakers from LinkedIn and Kiva.org. Perhaps even more thrilling was to see a very packed conference room teeming with people of all ages representing Bay Area non-profits. Then came the Social Media Revolution 2011 Video. It mesmerized us with its cutting-edge look and rhythmic beat, as it ticked off a number of striking facts: over 50% the world’s population is under 30; if Wikipedia were a book, it would be 2.25 million pages and if Facebook were a country, it would be the 3rd largest in the world. E-Mediat Participating NGO “Association of Journalist of Kairouan” won the 2nd prize of the best political video by Web Manager Center, which is one of the most famous Tunisian online magazine. On November 29, 2011 Mr Adel Nagati, President of the Association of Journalists of Kairouan was awarded the second prize of the best political video on Internet.
